Missing teeth can make it hard to chew food and can cause digestive difficulties. Removable dentures might not fit properly and can be annoying when having to take them out of your mouth. Through advancement in modern technology, permanent dental implants can be the solution.
What are Implants
Implants are artificial posts and teeth that are surgically placed into the upper and lower jaw bones. Implants are very strong and durable. They can last for many years and at Briarcliff Family Dentistry we offer bone graft implants, computer guided implants and flapless implants. Reasons for implants are:
- To help with joint pain or to help improve your speech.
- Restore parts of your face that sag where teeth are missing.
- Implants can make bridges or dentures fit more comfortably and securely.
General Implant Procedures
Each implant has a root system that contains a post in it. In some implants the post is already attached. In others, the post is not. A number of visits over several months is required for the procedure. X-rays will be taken and mold impressions will be made. This will let us know what your bone density is like, if you have any gum diseases and if there is enough spacing between the other natural teeth for implants to fit.
At Harbor Dental, we always make sure that a patient is feeling as little discomfort as possible so we always start our implant procedure by numbing the area where the implant is going to be placed.
Then, the implant will be attached to the bone. It may need to heal for up to six weeks. If the post is not already attached to the root system of the implant, another surgical procedure might be necessary to attach it.
After the correct healing time, an artificial tooth will be securely attached to the post. This can take usually between one to two months.
At Harbor Dental, we can ensure that your implants will look as good as the rest of your natural teeth. They will add years of comfort and usability and your smile will be beautiful!
